| In the top of the second inning, with one out,Tom Haller
(.285)drilled a Bob Gibson (1.12) offering into the outfield for a
double. He was left standing at second after Bob Bailey (.227) and
Zoilo Versalles (.196) both grounded out to Cardinals' shortstop Dal
Maxvill and failed to advance Haller. Haller would be the first, and
only, Dodger to reach base in this pitcher's duel. Bob Gibson baffled
the Dodger lineup and went on to retire the next 23 Los Angeles batters
he faced. It was a partivularly easy day at the plate for the
Cardinals' hitters either. Los Angeles's ace Don Drysdale (2.15) threw
a complete game as well, while only surrending six hits, walking none,
and striking out seven. But the demise of the Dodger ace came when, in
the bottom of the fifth, Mike Shannon (.266) pounded a 3-2 pitch into
the seats of Busch Stadium for a solo home run and the game's only run.
The clutch home run proved to be the back breaker of the Dodgers, and
the saving grace of the Cardinals, |
