Stieb mows down Expos
The Toronto Blue Jays took the 1984 Pearson Cup with a 2-0 victory before 38,115 delighted fans at Exhibition Stadium. Stieb allowed seven hits striking out two in his complete game shutout. "Dave got himself into a few jams" Bobby Cox said "but he managed to get himself out of them, and in the latter parts of the game he was brilliant." Bill Gullickson was also very good for the Expos allowing two runs and eight hits over eight innings. The Expos gave the Blue Jays a bit of a scare in the ninth inning loading the bases before Stieb got the final out. "I had Jimmy Key ready in the bullpen" Cox said "but I had complete faith that Stieb would get that final out."
