Headline:
Gruber the hero as Jays take World Series opener
Kelly Gruber hit a solo home-run and also got a two-run base-hit in the bottom of the eighth that led the Blue Jays to a 5-3 victory over the Atlanta Braves. Gruber got the single off of Atlanta reliever Tom Glavine who had given up an opening base-hit to Joe Carter. After walking John Olerud, Manuel Lee bunted Carter and Alomar over before Gruber's hit. Tom Candiotti was wild for the Blue Jays failing to master control of his knuckleball. He pitched 5 1/3 innings giving up three runs and walkin six versus three strike outs. Dave Stieb, Mike Timlin and Tom Henke pitched the rest of the game for Toronto. Mike Timlin got the win and Tom Henke the save.
